WebOct 20, 2024 · History of Fort Gilkicker. Fort Gilckicker was built between 1863 and 1871 as part of Prime Minister Lord Palmerstone’s fortifications of Portsmouth Harbour against the French. The building is semi-circular and faces out towards the Solent. It contains twenty two gun casements, protected 14 feet thick granite walls. WebIn 1914 the Royal Flying Corps was stationed at the fort and at nearby Grange airfield. It then became part of RAF Station Gosport in 1918. The RAF used the fort in the Second World War, it served as the headquarters for 7 Group Coastal Command from 1940 to 1945 and was known as ‘Aeronautics Gosport’.
